With Every Letter by Sarah Sundin

Genre: Historical Romance
Publisher: Revell

418 pages

About the Book:

Lt. Mellie Blake is looking forward to beginning her training as a flight nurse. She is not looking forward to writing a letter to a man she's never met--even if it is anonymous and part of a morale-building program. Lt. Tom MacGilliver, an officer stationed in North Africa, welcomes the idea of an anonymous correspondence--he's been trying to escape his infamous name for years.

As their letters crisscross the Atlantic, Tom and Mellie develop a unique friendship despite not knowing the other's true identity. When both are transferred to Algeria, the two are poised to meet face-to-face for the first time. Will they overcome their fears and reveal who they are, or will their future be held hostage by their pasts?

My Rating & Thoughts:

Mellie is an Army flight nurse and Tom is a engineer with the Army. They first begin interacting through anonymous pen pal letters which began as a moral booster between their units. Names are never exchanged, but Mellie figures out Tom's identity fairly early on but doesn't reveal herself. Mellie has a very low opinion of herself, but I found I could relate to her at times. She struggles to make friends with the other girls in the unit but two in particular try to befriend her as much as they can. Tom also goes through relationship struggles with the guys in his unit so this helps the two bond in some ways and provide suggestions to help each other. A friendship forms through the letters, but I wished more of the actual letters had been included as I felt this would have helped me get more invested in the relationship between them. I feel like we got to the know the characters individually by spending so much time with them in their day to day activities, that I didn't get as invested in the romance as I would normally. I found some of Mellie's actions frustrating as she should have been honest with Tom much earlier on, this would have saved her so much heartache. There was quite a bit of faith discussions and scripture shared between various characters. I really enjoyed some of the side characters.

(I purchased my copy of this book; opinions expressed
in this review are my honest opinion and completely my own.)
