About the Book:

He's sworn off love, but she has his heart in her sights and doesn't intend to miss.

Stained by his wastrel father's legacy, Jackson Spivey lives on the fringes of society. Townsfolk tolerate him since he keeps the local hotel supplied with fresh game, but mothers coach their daughters to avoid him. After tasting consistent rejection, Jackson spurns all attempts at courtship. The only things he can count on are his guns and his God.

Tessa James has been secretly in love with Jackson for ages, but trying to gain his favor only pushes him further away. When she learns Annie Oakley is traveling through Texas, Tessa seeks lessons from the famed markswoman. If Jackson's life revolves around guns, taking up shooting might help her engage his interest. Too bad she can't hit the broad side of a barn.

When Annie loans Tessa a custom pistol, however, things begin to change. The lore behind the mysterious weapon fosters hope that Tessa might finally hit the target of Jackson's heart. But when danger threatens, she might be forced to use the pistol for something other than finding love.

My Rating & Thoughts:

This is set in Texas in 1893, Tessa James is the main female character with Jackson Spivey the main male character. Tessa is determined to get Jackson to notice her, she has spent the last year trying to get his attention, but Jackson is set on not having a woman in his life. He believes due to his rough background that no woman deserves his background and as Tessa has a good reputation in town being associated with Jackson would sully her reputation. Tessa learns that Annie Oakley is in a neighboring town doing a demonstration and is teaching a class for women on how to shoot. She decides this is the perfect opportunity for her as Jackson works at a gun store and is an avid hunter. During the class Tessa receives a gun from Annie Oakley that comes with a story behind it saying if you possess this gun you will find a husband.  Upon her return back home she goes to Jackson and asks if he will help her with her target practice. Things take off from here. I really enjoyed these two characters. I loved Tessa's stubbornness and determination to get Jackson to notice her. I understood Jackson’s hesitation and him wanting protect Tessa. Once the two of them got together and started interacting I quickly grew to love their chemistry together. It was fun to follow along and watch it bloom. This was not the traditional storyline where the guy comes and saves the girl, rather something happens and Tessa ends up being the one that comes to Jackson’s rescue and gets him out of the situation he's in. This was an enjoyable read.

Favourite Quotes:
“If you care for the girl at all, your best bet is to have a sit down with her. Layout all the reasons why you are so bad for her. See what she says. If she doesn't care about none of that, then neither should you.”
