Missing Mabel by Nancy Mehl

Series: Curl Up and Dye #1
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Publisher: Barbour Books
Released: July 1, 2010
249 pages
About the Book:

Watch the tangled mess a Kansas hairdresser gets herself into when she reports to the funeral home that the body she is to work on is not the same as in her reference photo. Is she being punished when the director accuses her of stealing a diamond ring? Will Hilde Higgins’s former boyfriend help her unravel the issue or only bring more trouble to her life?

My Rating & Thoughts:

This is definitely a cozy mystery with some quirky characters. Hilde is a hairstylist for funeral homes and is positive one of the dead people she's working on isn't who they say she is. She is told she is wrong but is determine to figure out what is going on. While trying to find answers some strange events occur, making her more curious. Over the course of the story, she gets a boyfriend, makes friends with the old man across the street and is able to have a long needed heartful conversation with her mom in the midst of solving the case. I enjoyed meeting all the various characters and their quirks but I did not like how one moment we are right there with Hilde trying to solve the case and then the next moment is the wrap up explaining how Hilde figured it all out. Some of the explanations given in the summarization came out of nowhere and didn't understand how Hilde came to that conclusion. I am interested in reading the rest of the series though, because I like the romance storyline.

Attracted to Fire by DiAnn Mills

Genre: Romantic Suspense
Publisher: Tyndale House
Released: October 1, 2011
394 pages
About the Book:

Special Agent Meghan Connors' dream of one day protecting the president of the United States is about to come true. Only one assignment stands in her way. After the vice president's rebellious daughter is threatened, Meghan is assigned to her protective detail on a secluded ranch in West Texas. Unfortunately, working with Special Agent in Charge Ash Zinders may be as tough as controlling her charge. Ash has a reputation for being critical and exacting, and he's also after the same promotion as Meghan. But when the threats escalate and security on the ranch is breached, it becomes clear this isn't the work of a single suspect--it's part of a sophisticated plan that reaches deeper and higher than anyone imagined. And only Ash and Meghan can put the pieces together before it's too late.

My Rating & Thoughts:

The secret service have been assigned to project the Vice President's daughter after she is threatened, but the job won't be easy as she is a wild child addicted to drugs and alcohol. At first the threats are thought to be drug related but then stuff happens leading the agents to believe there is more going on, but what and who can they trust? I did not like Ash's attitude to having Meghan assigned to his team and the way he treated her made me dislike him. Lindsay was also hard to sympathize with at first, particularly while she was going through her withdrawals, but the longer she spent sober and began trusting and opening up to the agents I began to car for her and wished her the best. I was kept guessing who was involved in what was going on and if they would be able to figured it out before more people got hurt. There was one part that made me really sad and wish it hadn't happened. We see quite a few of the characters grow over the course of the story and open up their hearts and minds to others. I liked the characters, but I didn't really feel that connected to the romances.

Zane refuses to let Tessa go through this alone. But can he stand by the woman he loves and protect the president from a mounting threat at the same time?

My Rating & Thoughts:

We finally get the story between two characters we met in book one and learn there is history but we don't know what that history is but that history is revealed in this book. The suspense did keep me guessing with what was happening, however I cared more about spending time with the characters we had previously met earlier in the series. This was not my fave couple of the series, but I did enjoy following their relationship progress in a positive direction. There was a character that appeared that had me so confused on who they were but after doing a bit a research it turns out I missed a novella. The reveal of who the fixer was shocked me, I was completely expecting it to be someone else. I like the way the book ended and leads into her next series. Will that series carry over characters from previous books? I sure hope so.

Malicious Intent by Lynn H. Blackburn

Series: Defend & Protect #2
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Publisher: Revell
Released: March 1, 2022
345 pages
About the Book:

Dr. Ivy Collins, founder and CEO of Hedera, Inc., is ready to begin clinical trials of her company's cutting-edge prosthetic. Her work has been heralded by government, medical, and advocacy groups and everyone hopes the device will be a success. Well, almost everyone. Someone is trying to sabotage Hedera and the launch, but to what purpose--and how far will they go to get what they want?

Meanwhile, U.S. Secret Service Agent Gil Dixon can't believe he's finally been reunited with Ivy, his childhood best friend. Now that he's found her again, Gil intends to spend the rest of his life with her. But it will take all his skill to uncover the truth in time to save Ivy's life's work, her own life, and the innocent lives caught in the crossfire.

My Rating & Thoughts:

Childhood sweethearts reconnect, even after 15 years the feelings are still there. Ivy is being attacked when Gil and his partner arrive to question her about an incident. The reunion isn't the moment that either imagined, but it puts them together and Gil's protective instincts are immediately on high alert. I was invested in stopping whoever was after Ivy and questioning who could be responsible. The group of characters keep me absorbed in this story. Their friendship, the support of one another and fun teasing/banter between made me love this group and I was happy to once again see characters from her Dive Team series. I did feel like there were a few loose ends not tied up as nicely and I might of liked, but that did not take away from my enjoyment of the story.
