Heidi by Johanna Spyri (Review)

Genre: Classic
Published: 1880
246 pages

About the Book:

At the age of five, little orphan Heidi is sent to live with her grandfather in the Alps. Everyone in the village is afraid of him, but Heidi is fascinated by his long beard and bushy grey eyebrows. She loves her life in the mountains, playing in the sunshine and growing up amongst the goats and birds. But one terrible day, Heidi is collected by her aunt and is made to live with a new family in town. Heidi can't bear to be away from her grandfather; can she find a way back up the mountain, where she belongs?

My Rating & Thoughts:

This was such a sweet story. Heidi was adorable and optimistic and caring to everyone she comes in contact with. She could have been a miserable child after losing both parents young and then being sent off to a grandfather she had never met by the aunt who was the only family she'd ever known. But she wasn't. She embraced life on the Alm and found beauty in everything around her. The descriptions of the setting made it easy to picture everything. Heidi was easy to love and I could have spent more time with her.
